The house near the fountain, of 'Fontaine du Muletier' from which it takes its name, is a renovated former presbytery, built in the 19th century, on the South East of the Village of Bessas, on the Gardens Side.
250 meters above sea level, the location benefits from exceptional panoramic views, from the Ardeche Gorges through the meridional Ardeche plateaux and the Valley of the Ceze river.
The construction of the 'Fontaine du Muletier' in its current form was a direct result of the growth in the sericulture (silkworms raising).
'Muletier' (mule driver) calls to mind the former transport activity which reached its peak in the first half of the 19th century before declining following the various crisis of grapevine and silkworm.
The water from the fountain allowed in truly ancient times the creation and subsequent development of the village. The current structure which protects it dates back from 1867. Up until 1950, when the village was finally connected to the Ardeche water mains, the fountain was the village main supply of "potable" water.
